In the 1990s, I wrote and edited the book Body & Soul: The Black Women’s Guide to Physical Health and Emotional Well-Being. It was a Blackboard Bestseller, and there are still nearly 200,000 copies in print. After that I coauthored Finding Our Way: The Teen Girls’ Survival Guide with my friend Allison Abner and The Black Parenting Book with both Allison and Dr. Anne Beal.

You can generally buy any of these three books at most bookstores and on Amazon.com, but it’s always good to support your local independent black bookstore.

I am also proud to be a contributor to two recent anthologies. My essay “Revelations,” which first ran in both Essence and Afrekete: An Anthology of Black Lesbian Writing (edited by Catherine E. McKinley and L. Joyce DeLaney), appears in the wonderful collection, Spirited: Affirming the Soul and Black Gay/Lesbian Identity (edited by G. Winston James and Lisa Moore). It was published in 2006 by Red Bone Press. I also wrote a piece called “Sad News: A Reporter’s Notes on an Epidemic” for Gil Robertson’s groundbreaking anthology, Not in My Family: AIDS in the African-American Community.”

I have also had the pleasure of working with a number of authors—mainly behind the scenes—to conceive, package, write and edit their books. Look out for Career GPS: Strategies for Women Navigating the New Corporate Landscape by Dr. Ella L.J. Edmondson Bell (and me), published by Amistad Books.
